MOJO MAGAZINE QUESTION 4

In the MOJO magazine we see Ray Davies in a monochrome print looking upwards. We see this image and it looks very serious. The monochrome photo helps with this serious theme because it is as if what he is looking at is serious. We can tell this man is a musician because he is the center of visual interest of the MOJO music magazine. He covers the title to show his importance and also exaggerates the serious expression on his face.

Nothing on the magazine covers this image to show that he is the main musician and that he is extremely important. Next to him is the text describing the story and why he is the CVI of this music magazine. There is also space around Davies' face to once again show the importance and significance of him being there.

CUFFS PORTRAYING REAL LIFE

In this question you will be rewarded for drawing together elements from your full course of study, including different areas of the theoretical framework and media contexts.
How far does the extract try to create a sense that it is portraying 'real life'?
In your answer you should:
  •  analyse aspects of the extract giving detailed examples
  •  judge how far these aspects create a sense of watching 'real life'.

The extract aims to portray a sense of real life however this can be difficult and if done wrong the extract could look false. In cuffs the extract looks real because of the use of stereo types and the range of natural locations. However the shots from the point of view of a camera from ranges many people have not seen could make people lose the sense of realism created by the extract

In this extract, stereotyping is used to make the extracts seem more realistic because it does not make us want to question whether something is real or not. We are used to seeing some stereo types, which makes us think instantly that it is exactly like real life. An example of stereotyping in this extract is that the criminals are male. This is what the audience would be used to seeing, however it may not be true, and will seem normal for the audience and make it seem more real. Stereo types could make is seem as if you are watching real life because it seems like ordinary life not out of the ordinary.

Another way the extract could seem realistic is the range of realistic locations in which they go to. Natural lighting is used rather than artificial light to make it seem like the locations they go to are exactly like locations they go to in real life. The shop and area around it, which is being broken into, is very realistic due to the normality of everything that happens before the criminals arrive. There are many people in the background and a family is shown as worried when they see the criminals. Being worried at this point would be most people’s reaction to the criminals arriving and can help to make the extract seem realistic.

Although there are many aspects to this extract that make it portray real life there are also many shots showing the extract as far from real life. If we see camera shots from points of views we may not be used to seeing then it could make us question what we see and detract from the sense of realism. In the extract, we may question whether the extract is real or not due to some shots like an Ariel shot. This is used when we see the car chase going on and could make us see the extract as false because we are not used to seeing a car chase from this perspective.

Q2 Cuffs

Analyse how far the extract depicts the police's point of view rather than the criminals' point of view.

In the extract it is obvious it is depicted from the police's point of view rather than from the criminals' point of view. A way we can see this is from the contrast between the shots of the police and the shots of the criminals. When we see the criminals breaking into the shop we never got to see a close shot of their faces we only see shots from afar pointing mainly at what they are doing not who the criminals are. However when we see the police in the diner there are many shots of each of the police man and woman's face as they speak giving all attention to the police and allowing us to see exactly who is talking and what they are saying. This is very different from the shots with the criminals as they do not show who is doing what or any close up shots.

The editing in the extract allows the police to predominate. This means that every move the criminals make the police are able to counter the action of the criminal straight away. This occurs when we see the criminals drive through the window of the shop but then straight after we see the police get the message that this has happened and they get up straight away and counter their action. This editing makes the police seem dominent and powerful because it seems as though they can solve any problem and straight away.

Although the majority of the shots are from the polices perspective and from their point of view not all of the shots are from their point of view. When the pick up truck drives through the window of the shop it shows the CCTV which is not from the police's point of view so the extract is not containing of only the polices point of view. This shows that the extract obviously contains views of other people and not just the police.

CUFFS QUESTION 1

28.41
Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer.

Notes
Sirens as they drive off. Fear, sense on danger and tension. Symbol of danger. Digetic sound makes it seem realistic.

tense music. seem like the event is going faster and faster. Apearing in the back ground. Repetition of music. Continous through the scene

screeching tires and rumble of engine. Exaggerate the speed and intensity of what they are doing. Realism. Digetic sound

In the extract sirens are used to make the scene seem realistic and to show fear and danger. When we hear the sirens the first thought that we think is danger and this can help viewer to understand the intensity of this moment. The sound of the siren shows tension and makes us feel fear for if the police are going to catch the criminals.

WHAT OUR FILM WAS ABOUT

We decided to make a intro film that does not include any scary bits at first however it makes you wonder what may happen and what is in the box. In our film intro we see two students find a box with fingers hanging outside of it. This makes us wonder what is inside the box and we cut the film before we could see what was in the box to make people continue thinking about what could be inside. A struggle whilst filming was finding the spot for the camera so that both of us could be in the film. In the end we only had one person at a time.

USE OF MEDIA LANGUAGE

Many people read newspapers for personal identity, people who read different newspapers may consider themselves in different ways. People who read The Observer may think of themselves as open minded. Newspapers change the way they are written for the types of people reading them so the observer is open minded so in the newspaper both sides of an argument are shown to suit the people reading it. If a person reading The Observer, for example, does not agree with the viewpoint they will still agree with some points made in the argument. Newspapers use language like this so people will agree with points made, respect themselves and respect the newspaper.

Images are used in the home page of newspapers because it allows the viewer to see straight away what is inside the magazine. In the Observer magazine, there are colorful images with block writing underneath to intrigue the reader to read the article and to inform the reader of what the article is about. The images will usually contain photos of individual photos as this is what is considered more intriguing to a reader, this is because many people would rather read something about someone rather than about something.

Explain two reasons why a film company would release a video game linked to a film.

Explain two reasons why a film company would release a video game linked to a film.
Teenagers may not watch a film like the lego movie because they consider it childish, however many teenagers may think that video games are not childish and a way to socialize with their friends. Rather than the movie being for children only by releasing a video game the range of ages who want to watch or play the LEGO movie will increase by a lot and much more ages will play the lego movie video game. Teenagers consider video games a challenge and so long as it is challenging teenagers will play, and then want to watch the LEGO movie.
A film company may also release a video game because it could introduce another group of people to the film. There are many different groups of people who like different things, many people like going to the cinema and many people like to play video games, both of these types of people could be included in a film franchise if a video game is released as well as the game. The population who play video games may play the films video game and then want to watch the film and compare what happens in the film and in the game. This would increase sales by a lot and definitely increase the popularity of the film.
